Apparently, Nani has been getting massive phone bills lately. Putting in a certain amount of investigation brought out the fact that most of the calls were being made to Madrid. Now before you start formulating rather fascinating wild theories of your own, let me vanquish all conjecture and put forward the truth for you. The recipient of most of Nani’s calls happens to be a certain man called Cristiano Ronaldo. For those who have forgotten who Ronaldo was, Cristiano happens to be the same guy who had an orgasmic fascination for Real Madrid and left us this transfer season to finally pursue his ‘dream’. Nani, meanwhile, was handed the chance to fill his fellow Portuguese’s shoes, a task at which he has disappointed massively so far. So, in this hour of need, Nani was left with no other option but to make a distress call. And who better to give advice than the man whom he is trying to succeed?
On a more serious note, Nani’s case is becoming more and more bewildering for all United fans. Almost everyone will agree to the fact that as far as talent goes, this lad is extremely prodigious. However, with the exception of Rafael Benitez, I have never seen a person make so many judgemental errors consistently. Time and time again, a bewitching solo run would be followed by a wild shot into he stands. Nani is adept at getting into good positions and then making a hash of the opportunity presented to him. He is capable of swinging in lethal crosses; sadly, he never converts his capability into actual output. Rooney’s cry of anguish and frustration on Saturday after being at the receiving end of Nani’s pathetic decision making is still very much fresh in our minds. That moment was a perfect example of what is wrong with Nani. Awe-inspiring and frustrating in equal measures, the Portuguese polarizes opinion across United fans from all over the world.
Nani, of course, knows all these. He would have heard Rooney’s howl of frustration, along with a number of other howls that have been a backdrop of his displays of his immaturity. He would have read countless articles of criticism, would have heard people on the streets doubting him, would have seen it on telly. Naturally, he wouldn’t be pleased about all this. He has already vowed publicly once to improve on his game this season. Now, he has revealed that he has a chat with Cristiano Ronaldo over his game every time he screws up for us meaning that on Saturday they must have been at it for hours.
“Cristiano and I talk a lot. We speak about my own game and he gives me confidence to go out and perform.”
Very recently, Ronaldo himself had come springing to the defence of his countryman going to the extent of saying that Nani would become one of the world’s best players in a few years.
“I have seen that Nani is playing much more than he was last season when I was there. That’s good for him and he will benefit. Now he has more opportunities, he will show the fans how great a player he is. There is a lot more to come from him. Nani is an excellent player and I am sure that in a few years he will be among the best players in the world.”
Frankly, if Nani is to become one of the best players in the world, he has a lot of work to do on his decision making. With Ryan Giggs in spectacular form, the onus is on Nani to step up to the mark. Age and talent are clearly on his side. It is just his footballing brain that is not serving him well. He needs to come up with answers fast because if he doesn’t, he will suddenly discover the uncompromising nature of modern football. Will the real Nani please stand up?
