Building a new United and Wayne Rooney’s Role

Manchester United is at the brink of unfolding a new chapter in the club history and unfortunately or maybe fortunately most of the Fans are blindly unaware of it or are simply turning a blind eye towards the saga. Ronaldo was sold to the ‘White House’ for a whopping sum of £80m and the Argie Tevez did nothing better than stabbing us for Shitty. Berbatov last season’s extravagant spending has come up with merely 9 premiership goals and that too against clubs like West Brom and Bolton. It is a very grave situation that we may be facing at Old Trafford, much like the similar one we faced in 2004. With Sir Ferguson in his final years at Old Trafford it his duty and moral responsibility to make yet another new United team with its faith in the youth rather than the Grand Old Stars of yesteryears who are in the twilight of their careers. It is only his experience that can see us through the tough times. However, many fans seem to be of the belief that Wayne Rooney could be the new backbone of the club. Many also believe that he will fit into the shoes of Cristiano Ronaldo, or WILL HE?

While the confidence of supporters like me was really boosted when we heard this statement from Rooney, yet it is in all measurements and over expectation and estimate of oneself.

“Put me in the middle and I WILL score all the goals”

Maybe, just maybe we fans are expecting a bit too much out of Rooney just like he is expecting a bit too much of himself to have a breakout season next year. I have no doubt that this next season will see the best of his career but best enough to completely fill the void that Ronaldo has created, that we will have to wait to see.

While he is one of the best players in the Premiership, he is hardly the player whose name comes up in our minds when we search for the Best Footballers of the present world. United have had hard working players who ran around the field and aided goals and where cool enough to let Ronaldo run the show. However, now CR7 is gone and we have a void to fill. Rooney needs goals to prove his worth and succession to the throne of the showstopper and I am sure he will score 20 or 25 or 30 goals, whatever that magic number of goals you might want from him. With Berba to support him on the flank and Antonio Valencia and Obertan as aides in the Midfield, we have a team to look forward to this season.

While I present a rosy and hopeful picture, there is a fear that lurks about a team where the young and the inexperienced and the unproven are in plenty. It is upto SAF to give us his last parting present to the Red Devils. Instead of creating expectation levels for the club and players to perform, it might be one of those seasons where we might have to let loose and watch the team grow. Grow back into what it has always been- the BEST CLUB IN THE WORLD. So all fellow United supporters, relax back and enjoy football this season, watch the Red Devils make a run for what has always rightfully been  ours- THE TREBLE! Glory ManUtd!

Your comment: “With Sir Ferguson in his final years at Old Trafford it his duty and moral responsibility to make yet another new United team” is not really right. Fergie owes us United fans nothing. He has given us 23 years of virtually non stop success. If he walked out today, we could not complain or moan about it. He has given the biggest part of his working life to United don’t forget.

Agreed! But when you are at a position of responsibility that great and have the real interest of the Club in your heart and you know that no one, whosoever succeeds will be half as good, you have a feeling to do all that you can in the little time you have left. It is this moral responsibility and duty that I meant and not the superficial one!

I for one agree with Carliona.. Sir Alex doesn’t, and never will, owe us anything.. If nothing else, it is we who owe him.. All the fans, all the players, ex- and present, owe another season of faith and hard work to reward all the years SAF has put in so far..
As for Wayne, I have and always will believe in him. I genuinely believe that he can step up to assume Ronaldo’s mantle. He does it for England for crying out loud..

Cannot argue with two of my good friends over the issue! ;)

He sure has much more responsibility on his shoulders. But I take the fans’ expectations of him scoring 30-40 goals with a pinch of salt. This is not to say that I doubt Wazza’s abilities. But I’m more supportive of the style of his play. If we place him in the middle, can we possibly replace his former role? On the left, on the right, in the midfield, tracking back to help the full backs….Quite simply NO… I don’t vouch for giving him a central role all of a sudden.. We need the old rooney more than ever now.. I believe SAF will start by giving him some, but not many, games in a central role.

Ohh! 30-40 goals is in my humble opinion an over expectation for this season. Next season, definitely a possibility but I think Rooney should just be given a proper position to play and then let him do what he does best, play for United!
Again Middle is in my opinion not what he should be given in one go but SAF should analyze his role and position in the new team.
But then of course he would already know it cause he is SAF! ;)
