Sir Alex has revealed that fans should expect to see a different style of game from the Red Devils this season to adjust to the new team dynamics that stares at us after the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo. Rather than ask Wayne Rooney to operate out wide, Sir Alex intends to play him up top alongside Michael Owen or Dimitar Berbatov, who the boss sees as being a key player this term. I could not agree more after seeing Rooney fail to deliver as promised by him before the Pre Season. Hopefully this will be a better setup than playing Rooney up front as we had him post the 80th minute yesterday against Bayern in the Audi Cup Finals.
“Obviously Cristiano is a big loss in terms of the goals he gave us,” said the gaffer in the new issue of Inside United (on sale 5 August). “But we’ll just have to find the goals from somewhere else, and our tactics will adjust accordingly. Fans will see us playing a slightly different style of football this season.”
The Gaffer has also expressed his confidence in Berba once again. While Dimitar has shown promise he has failed to shine to his true capabilities. In my opinion (and it looks like Sir Alex’s as well) Berba is class and an uncut diamond who needs a bit of polish to show his true value.
“Last season was a strange one for Dimitar and we maybe didn’t use him in the right way, but we know exactly how to use him now – further up the pitch, playing as a centre forward,” said Sir Alex. “He’s had a first season to settle in, he can get us more than 20 goals.”
Once again Sir Alex has advised our players to pace up their goal scores for the coming season so that CR7’s void is not overly pronounced (uselss to say it will not be evident). It will be a goliath task if the responsibility falls on one lone player be it Waza or MO7 or Berba or Kiko or Valencia! Phew!! That looks great on paper!
However, as rightly said by Fergie, the goals provided by the midfield have dried up in the recent years. Long forgotten were the days when Giggs, Becks and Scholes used to find the net and support the guys at the front. He calls upon Park, Valencia, Nani and Welbeck to do the needful.
“Going back a few years, we could always guarantee goals from Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham, who always pitched in with about 10 a season. Those goals from midfield have dried up a little in recent years, so we have to address that,” he said.
“I’ll be looking to Park, Nani, Valencia – even Welbeck and Macheda – to contribute 40 goals between them. The defenders will contribute a few from set-pieces too.”
While we are yet to see the formation for the coming season, yet it appears that we will be more that likely going back to the traditional 4-4-2 this season now that the liquid role given to CR7 is no longer needed.
