Sports News - February 15, 2009

Almost every newspaper has run a story today carrying the so called inflammatory remarks of Nani, who went on to talk about his life at United and how he feels that he has not been given enough chances. The funny part was how newspapers were ready to jump the gun and talk of a fallout in dormant stage at the OT. Well turns out newspapers have never really understood OT that well. Read on to know what Nani meant and why it hardly means a fallout with the man we know as Sir Alex Ferguson.

Let me quote all that Nani has said before putting forth my case and reasons:

  1. “Ferguson is a very complicated man. He’s tough. If things are all right, then they are all right. But when he thinks something is wrong, everything is screwed.”
  2. “He can go from complimenting you to just plain trashing you in a matter of minutes. Has it happened to me? Hell, yes. He’ll say ‘Nani, how could you miss this or this’?
  3. “He shouts at players in front of everyone. No one escapes, everybody is the same. (Ryan) Giggs and (Gary) Neville suffer most, because they have more experience.”
  4. “People expect more from me and it’s not easy. But they are also not doing what they said they were going to,” he added. “I know it would be better if I scored more goals.
  5. “I can have a spectacular game but nobody guarantees me I will be starting the next match. It shatters your confidence. I did not play the important matches, against Liverpool, Manchester City or Tottenham. Not playing these games, I am a bit sad. But for now I am not considering leaving.”

Now let the analysis begin.

1. All that the bloke said was Fergie is a complicated man. He did miss the “Sir”, but anything more that is simply not there in the statement. We all knew that bit about Fergie, did we not folks.

2. Yes! Nani and it is because he is there to manage a football team and not some 50cent per minute call girl who talks romance at your face for you to blow off. Of course he would say what you did great and pathetic in the same breath. It just happens that in the case of Nani, the latter dominates.

3.Well that is in my opinion something that Fergie should be proud of Nani for having said. We all knew about the hairdryer, but the fact that the likes of Ryan Giggs and Neville are not spared the wrath of the devil makes it very fair in my opinion.

4.Oh yes Nani, they do expect more of you because we thought you could grow out to be our next Ronaldo. Well it is completely upto you to step out of the shadow and face the expectations. Whether you are Manchester United or Portsmouth, expectations are bound to arise. And glad to see you realise that you are doing a crap job at scoring goals. Once again however nothing worthy of suggesting a fallout.

5. Spectacular!! Ahem.. when was the last time you had one. The face that Valencia or even Obertan may get a preference over you is all to do with your game. Learn something from the likes of Michael Owen, a player definitely of a higher calibre but when was the last time you heard him complain that he was not given the 90 minutes of a game. Hell, he was on the bench after scoring the goal in one of them. We never heard of any complains even then Nani. It is a simple thing called ” Let your feet do the talking.”

However, I would love to point the media pundits to the fact that he clearly speaks out loud that he has not considered leaving Manchester United. That is something where he was truly careful and I appreciate that of our players not to reveal dressing room clashes to the press. Despite that the only thing that Nani has done wrong is the timing. With the debt scenario at OT, it would not be a very far off notion where we might have to bootstrap a little. If that were to happen, I am afraid Nani is running out of options to make it out as a Red. With Valencia and Obertan giving in more to the team, there is hardly any reason for Fergie to pick him for his rashness and waywardness. Nani must learn to see the bigger picture in the games, something he has failed to do despite his pace and skills.

In my opinion, all this is nothing but the frustration and resignation of a player who has failed to step out of the shadows of one of the best players of Manchester United : CR7. It is time Nani proves his £17m price tag and steps out of a 1 goal in 12 game form or shall I say 12 goals in 85 games!
