FA bans Fergie for two matches

Sir Alex Ferguson has been banned for four matches two of which are suspended until the end of 2010-11 season, and fined 20,000 pounds ($33,150) by Football Association (FA) following the Alan Wiley ‘unfit’ comments. The suspended sanction will be automatically activated should Sir Alex be found guilty of a similar charge before the end of the 2010/11 season. It will be in addition to any sanction imposed for that offence. Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney is facing the prospect of an Football Association charge after shouting the words “12 men” in camera following the Chelsea match against United yesterday. Sir Alex Ferguson may also be involved in the scrutiny for criticizing the referee Matkin Atkinson. Rooney’s action is being drawn parallels with that of Didier Drogba after he infamously ranted about the referee post Chelsea’s Barcelona match last Champions League Semis which led to a three match ban. Sir Alex charged by the FA

Sir Alex Press ConferenceAfter opening a Pandora’s box by uttering the dreaded f-word, Sir Alex has been formally charged by the FA on Monday. For those still not in the know, Sir Alex had let the venom in his tongue do his bidding after the Sunderland draw at Old Trafford by calling Alan Wiley ‘unfit’ to do the job at hand. Needless to say, the entire referee community was up in arms with Alan Leighton, the head of the referees’ union, grabbing the spotlight repeatedly by calling for Sir Alex’ head. It is clear now that the FA has caved into the pressure created by the referees and has decided to make an example out of Sir Alex. Sir Alex now has the statutory 14 days to respond to the charge before the FA fix up a date for the hearing. [Keep Reading…]

Rebecca Lowe, the ESPN correspondent who was responsible for bringing out the now (in)famous Fergie interview where he launched into Alan Wiley’s fitness of all things, brings out a fascinating account of the whole incident. According to Lowe, Sir Alex was all smiles as he made his way to the media crew, which is weird considering the fact that United were uncharacteristically poor on the night. If Rowe’s observations are not distorted, then it leaves no doubts about the cold-bloodedness of Sir Alex’s attack. Poor Mr. Wiley had to pay for United’s mediocrity on the field. Sir Alex, in a ploy to keep the media attention off his under-performing players, decided to shift the eye of the storm to an altogether different location.
